Being tech savvy and having nearly 35 years of experience with computers and technology, friends and family are always asking me to teach them to make their computer, smartphone, tablets and other electronic devices do what they wanted them to do.

In 2012, I decided to turn this assistance into a business so I could offer it my fellow Chicagoans as a way to harness the ever-increasing amount of technology in their lives.

Why did you choose the area?

Lakeview is the part of the city where I have always felt most at home, with the people, the culture and the natural beauty of Lincoln Park and Lake Michigan.

However, since I travel to the client's location to offer my assistance, my service area also covers a large area of the north side, from the Loop to Evanston and from the lake out towards the Kennedy.

What does your business offer?

Everybody already owns pieces of complex technology these days, but many of us don't know how to truly make them do what we want. Easy Computer Learning offers private one-on-one instruction at your home or workplace on how to use all that technology, including PCs, Macs, desktops, laptops, tablets, smartphones, Kindles/Nooks, Apps, Software and more.

Instead of sitting in a generic group class and hoping they get something out of it, the client gets private teaching sessions tailored to their specific needs and done at their own pace of learning, all while using the devices that they actually use on a daily basis. No pressure or stress, just the satisfaction of finally making their technology do what they want when they want...imagine that! :)

Some clients are interested learning the basics like setting up and checking email, safely and securely browsing the Internet, downloading and editing photos or creating a document. Others want to gain more advanced skills like selling items on eBay, making voice and video calls online, synching multiple technology devices and troubleshooting computing snafus. The Services tab of www.easycomputerlearning.com can give you an even broader idea of the types of things I have taught people.

What's your most popular product or service?

ECL's most popular service is teaching people how to use handheld technology like smartphones, Kindles/Nooks and tablets. Most of the computer skills people have acquired are based upon how a PC works, and these handheld devices function in a completely different way, causing a lot of confusion and frustration for their new owners when they try and treat them like a PC.

I teach clients a new mindset for interacting with their mobile devices and assist them in configuring their technology to do what exactly they want it to do.

What's something interesting about your business your customers might not know?

Most people don't know that I also offer instruction services that would help a small business or sole proprietor, like setting up an accounting system using Quickbooks or using web tools to design a simple, professional website. I'm also very good at teaching how to program remotes and TV-related technology like DVRs and cable and satellite boxes.
