Cleaning Off Cars Leads to Plowing Problems

Snow on the side streets in Lake View? It could be because of drivers cleaning off their cars — the neighborhood has reportedly been plowed five times since Sunday.

Several Patch readers have reached out to us recently to get the scoop on what's going on with plowing in Lake View.

"Any word on when our side streets are going to see a snow plow?" Kelly Kniewel asked us on Twitter. "I've not driven on or seen one that has been plowed."

We did a little digging and found the answer — blame Chicago drivers, not the plow trucks.

"When cars are cleaned off and moved out of parking spaces, the snow from underneath is brought back into the middle of the street, causing the streets to continuously need to be plowed again," said Erin Duffy, the Director of Community Outreach in Alderman Tom Tunney's office.

Duffy confirmed that each street in the area has been plowed and salted at least five times since Sunday morning at 4 a.m.

Similarly, when temperatures are -10 degrees or colder, the salt and calcium chloride have very little effect on the ice — making it extra tough to drive, much less walk, in the area.

You can track where the snow plows in the city are at any time on the City of Chicago's website here
