Broadway Youth Center Permit Approved
The BYC will remain in its current location at the Wellington Ave. United Church of Christ.
The Chicago Zoning Board of Appeals unanimously approved the Broadway Youth Center's request for a special permit to continue operating in their current location in the Wellington Ave. United Church of Christ at 615 W. Wellington Ave.
The permit was approved 4-0, on the conditions that the contact information and hours of operation for the Center are posted. The Board also noted that the special use permit is limited until March 31, 2015, when the Center's lease ends.
The BYC has been operating in its current location since June, but found out recently that they would need the special use permit to remain in the residential neighborhood. Supporters of the BYC said that Lake View was the best place for the Center, which primarily serves the LGBTQ population, to remain. Others felt that the Center should be moved to a non-residential street.
The South East Lake View Neighbors (SELVN) voted last week to not support the BYC's request for a permit.
