A fight among teenagers on Addison Street ended when a man stabbed one of the teens in the stomach with a 12-inch butcher knife.
An 18-year-old man from Crown Point, IN, was stabbed with a 12-inch butcher knife on the 800 block of West Addison Street in Lake View Friday night, causing serious injuries, police say. It all happened just outside the Lake View Lutheran Church and across the street from the 19th District Police Station. According to the report, the man was with a 17-year-old friend who was staying at The Crib, a homeless shelter for 18-to 24-year-old youth at Lake View Lutheran Church. It was once the only of its kind in Chicago. The pair was outside on the sidewalk when a teenage acquaintance and his girlfriend walked over, the man told police. The girlfriend kept calling the man’s name, and when he told her to stop because he wasn’t feeling well, the …

A local barbershop generated hundreds of donations that will help keep more than 600 toasty as the temperatures dip.
Hundreds of people in need of warm clothes will have them as temperatures plunge, thanks to a coat drive coordinated by a renown barbershop. Floyd's 99 rock 'n roll barbershop in Lincoln Park and Lake View, along with four other Floyd's 99 shops in the city, cumulatively collected more than 600 coats for charity, along with hats, gloves and mittens. "We’ve been giving them to local churches and shelters for the past week, but the bulk went to the Franciscan Outreach in Lincoln Park," Floyd's spokeswoman Chris Kelley said in a written statement. "(On Sunday) we’re planning to drop off another Santa-sized pile of winter gear we collected." The drive got off to a slow start because of warm fall and early winter weather, he said, but quickly …

A look at the issue of homelessness in Chicago, in part through the eyes of a North Side man who used his resources in a Lincoln Park interim housing facility to overcome living on the street.
People who crossed paths two years ago with Albert Lopez likely had no idea he was living on the street. "I grew up in a (Chicago Housing Authority project) on the southeast side," said the upbeat North Side resident. "I was street smart. I think I was better off than most." The 48-year-old DePaul University graduate and former Chicago Public Schools teacher says he doesn't rely on the holiday season to remind him to be thankful. He's grateful every day. Lopez became homeless after losing his job, and in 2006, he developed liver disease and diabetes. He can now afford a subsidized Uptown apartment, thanks to graduating from the Lincoln Park Community Shelter's On Track Program, which has helped about 300 homeless Chicagoans regain …

Restaurant managers are asking individuals abusing the system to only come in once a week, and additional cameras have been added to the store.
After complaints from neighbors with safety concerns, Panera Cares says it’s limiting the number of times “food insecure” individuals can come to the store for a cheap meal. Representatives for the business at 616 W. Diversey Pkwy attended Monday’s South East Lake View Neighbors meeting to update residents about the things they’re doing to address safety concerns. Jimmy Hopper, one of the store’s managers, said they’ve been limiting people they think are abusing the system. “People who were coming in every day, we are asking they limit themselves to one a week,” Hoppers said. “…Two reasons we kind of backed off from that. If we had people coming in that aren’t abusing the system, I’m not going to have them come in and sign their names. “It…

I got kicked off of Everyblock for asking if anybody was voting for Republican candidates. It got flagged unneighborly and I got harassing private messages, some of whom were probably from you. Everyblock has been defeated and is gone, the other problems like this place endure. Package thefts went up 80 percent within two weeks of this place opening and other kinds of crimes related to an influx …   more ›
