It's been a long week. You need a pick-me-up.
Friday's here. Thank goodness. One more day of work, and that's it. Here's a little inspiration to get you through to Saturday. For more than a month now, Patch and Grape-Nuts have teamed up to present stories about your neighbors, neighbors who have faced challenges that would seem insurmountable to many of us. But not to the people we've featured in this series, Journeys. Not surprisingly, the stories have generated dozens of comments on Patch and on Facebook: "Great story..." "Thanks for sharing..." "So wonderfully inspiring..." And, so, here they are again. Great stories shared to inspire. Take a look at what these people have faced. Then click on the story to see their responses. And feel better about your tough week. Pit Bull …
No one was injured in the flames, which started around 7:30 p.m. Thursday night.
Firefighters tamed a blaze that destroyed one home in Lake View Thursday evening, and damaged two others. The fire started at about 7:25 p.m. in the top floor of a home on the 3700 block of Bosworth, in between Waveland and Grace avenues. Police have temporarily blocked off the area from Addison to Grace. One man was inside the home at the time, and escaped without injury, police said at the scene. Flames from the home blew onto the deck and of the adjacent homes, causing what at first appears to be minor damage. Jen Lipford saw the smoke from her front room, just south of the home and became concerned after seeing the fire trucks. “Not more than a few minutes later I saw sirens and knew it was more than a BBQ and I looked out and saw a …
An audit of the Chicago Department of Transportation reveals red-light cameras can’t be proven to increase safety, along with a record of every camera in the city. See where Lake View stands, and which intersection ticketed more than 16,000 drivers in 201
The results of a red-light camera system audit are showing where drivers are being slammed with the most tickets, and the camera coming in second place lands at an intersection in Lake View. The audit was requested in February because of questions posed by area alderman; 32nd Ward Ald. Scott Waguespack, included. They wanted proof that the Australian company Redflex Traffic Systems Inc. and Chicago installed the devices to improve traffic safety rather than to create a source of revenue. It turns out auditors with the Chicago Inspector General’s Office were "unable to substantiate its claims that the city chose to install the red-light cameras at intersections with the highest angle crash rates in order to complete safety." The results of …
The alderman says nothing has been agreed to regarding signage in the plaza, but the Cubs’ new designs show large pylons with advertisements surrounding a farmers market and Christmas scene.
New design renderings released Thursday by the Chicago Cubs visualize what the Triangle Plaza adjacent to Wrigley Field could look like post-construction, complete with ice rinks, farmers markets and multiple advertising towers. The Triangle Plaza, which sits at the corner of Clark and Addison streets, is part of the Cubs $500 million redevelopment plan for Wrigley Field and the surrounding neighborhood. The team already announced they plan to construct a 6,000-squre-foot Jumbotron in the outfield, but according to their planned development, the team is also considering 6,000 additional square-feet of signs in the Triangle Plaza. “Some of the big parts of that (planned development) is the acquisition of city property, rights of way, a cul-…
Here's the story of Marlene Konkoly, who found creative ways to spend less and save more so she can retire at 50. This story is the first in our series about Extreme Savers.
Americans may be living longer, but our retirement plans aren’t keeping up. Which means people are living longer with smaller bank accounts. But Marlene Konkoly will retire at age 50. How did she do it? She contributes a whopping 45 percent of the gross annual income she earns as a procurement officer for an automotive finance company to her retirement—all while owning a home and remaining debt-free. Konkoly is actually well ahead of the retirement savings curve compared to many of her fellow Americans. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, fewer than half of Americans even know how much money they would need to retire. And nearly a third of employees who had access to a defined contribution plan such as a 401(k) did not participate …

As promised, Lincoln Park's first ever "Lincoln Avenue LIVE" street festival will feature a special kids' area. It just won't be your typical one. The developer of the proposed Boystown hotel says he’ll negotiate with neighbors, but if they’re hoping for a 3-story hotel, “they’re just not going to get me.”
The developer behind the newly proposed OUT Chicago hotel says he’s willing to negotiate with neighbors, but if some compromises aren’t made, there may not be a hotel. Ian Reisner, managing partner of Parkview Developers and founder of The OUT NYC, plans to build a 10-story, 112-room hotel in the heart of Boystown at 3343 N. Halsted St. Designed to be “straight friendly,” the resort would cater to the LGBT community. But some neighbors surrounding the development site are less than pleased, with critics saying the building’s height is out of proportion with the community and a hotel will only increase congestion. Reisner said he’s already shaved three stories off his plans for the resort based on feedback from community leaders. He says …
