Gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the past three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011. In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer driving demand. This year, though, Midwest refineries haven't been able to produce as much gas, which has pushed prices to all-time highs. "If you can gas up today to prepare for your Memorial Day driving, do so," said Chuck Bonner, the lead…

Real life struggle of same-sex Chicago couple highlights need for change, Rep. Mike Quigley says.
Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) spoke out again against the lack of protections for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community within the comprehensive immigration reform proposals currently under consideration by Congress. “I am extremely disappointed that my colleagues in the Senate are choosing not to extend the same rights and considerations to same-sex families that we give to any other family in our immigration system,” said Rep. Quigley. “I’m reminded of Grant and Gabe, a Chicago couple who live everyday under a cloud of uncertainty because discriminatory policies like the Defense of Marriage Act do not recognize their same-sex marriage. "American entrepreneurs like Grant are forced to choose between…
The new gastro brewpub DryHop is officially opening in Lake View after delays in construction and expectations to open first in December, then in March.
The highly anticipated new bar and restaurant DryHop Brewers in East Lake View will officially open on June 13, representatives with the restaurant announced Thursday. Located at 3155 N. Broadway, the 3,000-square-foot gastro brewpub will focus on small-plate food, a trendy brewery atmosphere and craft beer brewed in-house, even served to-go in growlers. Owner Greg Shuff initially planned to open the gastro brewpub in December, but hit snags in construction and faced a slow permitting process. But since then he says crews have been moving quickly to get the space open by the summer. “We’ve been running really smoothly construction wise,” Shuff said. “There have been no major holdups with inspections, and all the inspectors said they were …

The measure sponsored by the Lincoln Park and Lake View representative would help uninsured Illinoisans and bring the state in line with the Affordable Care Act.
A measure sponsored by state Rep. Sara Feigenholtz (D-Chicago) to extend health care benefits to 342,000 low income Illinoisans and bring Illinois in line with the federal Affordable Care Act passed the House Human Services Committee on Tuesday. “This Medicaid reform is the first critical piece of the Affordable Care Act," Feigenholtz said. "After this is enacted in January of 2014, childless adults living at the poverty level will now have access to Medicaid benefits and health care services just like any current Medicaid recipient in this state. This bill will allow us to offer vital preventative care and a medical home to hundreds of thousands adults living in poverty.” Currently, childless adults aged 18-64 are not eligible for …

Love the "surfaces". But what's underneath them? Faulty, obsolete electrical wiring? Crumbling foundations/puddles in basement/storage/laundry areas? Circa. 1910 lead plumbing? Bed bugs?   more ›

The current office space sits across the street from Wrigley Field, and was snatched up by the Cubs’ owners for $2.3 million.
The owners of the Chicago Cubs have purchased another building in Wrigleyville, adding to their collection of properties surrounding Wrigley Field. The Ricketts family purchased the almost 29,000-square-foot building at 3721 N. Clark St. for $2.3 million, Chicago Real Estate Daily reports. They purchased it from a Tribune Co. venture that offered a lease-to-buy deal when the Ricketts purchased the team in 2009. The Cubs also occupy the building as office space, but representatives with the team have long told the community during neighborhood meetings the space has become cramped. Designs for the Ricketts’ $500 million redevelopment of Wrigley Field and the surrounding area include new offices on the north end of the proposed Triangle …
