I was heading over to my children's Field Day at Blaine as this event unfolded. Compliments to theRead More Blaine administration and staff for taking swift and cautious action.

No kidding. It sounds like they handled it well.

This is great news! As someone who reads a lot of the comments on Patch, I've noticed crime and realRead More estate are probably the top hot button topics. Teenagers who believe they have a bright future are less likely to throw it away by committing crimes, using drugs, or doing other risky behavior. So, our community definitely benefits. Congrats to the students, teachers, parents, and faculty!

Wow. Are the schools that are participating in this seemingly charitable project aware of whoRead More USAgain really is? They are a for-profit company associated with an extremely sketchy Danish organization, and they do virtually nothing to help the communities they get donations from. This is detailed in this excellent article: http://www.phlmetropolis.com/2012/11/the-secret-life-of-clothing-bins.php that I suggest you read before donating. What's wrong with the Good Will or another recycler that works locally? Mary Davis, Lakeview resident

Lee I also agree with much of what you are saying. Unless you are an owner or property manager of aRead More mid size building in Lakeview parking is not an issue. For us it is! I have great renters . .thankfully, but have also lost many good prospects because of the parking situation. It is what it is . .
Lee Crandell March 24, 2013 at 02:50 pm
Mari, I don't disagree it's an issue for some people, but if you had a building with parking, you'dRead More lose good prospects like me who don't want the cost of a parking space we won't use included in our rent. Parking just shouldn't be a lead factor in decision-making or a measure of a successful place, which it's often made out to be in Lakeview. 1 in 3 households in Lakeview don't even own a car, and even those who do don't often use their cars -- 2 in 3 Lakeview commuters get to work without a car. This is great for building owners like you who aren't burdened with the extra cost of a parking garage, and it means residents like me spending less on driving have more money left over to spend on housing, restaurants, etc. Unfortunately, our zoning is in total mismatch to this reality, forcing developers to build excessive parking for new developments, passing those costs along to renters, home buyers and shoppers, many of whom don't even drive. And yet, the parking "problem" apparently isn't such an issue that it prevents people from coming to Lakeview, making us one of the most thriving neighborhoods in the city. It also hasn't prevented people from wanting to live here, driving our housing costs up to among the highest in the city. Urban neighborhoods like Lakeview thrive by putting people first, not cars first. If there's demand for more density of people and business activity, but not for more parking and driving -- that builds on our strength and we should embrace it.

To Justin- My home, and all the homes on my block, pre-date Wrigley field by 10-15 years. UsingRead More your logic, we should have more rights since we've been there longer. After all, they built a ball park in a NEIGHBORHOOD. They knew what they were getting into. Actually, we neighbors are fine living in co-existence with the ball park. But Ricketts wants carte blanche to “run his business” in OUR neighborhood (unlimited night games, concerts, proprietary street fests, disregard for Chicago's Landmark protections.) It doesn’t work like that. Alderman Tunney is doing his job well: he’s acting as a voice for the people who are being bullied by a billionaire. I’ll add: a billionaire who, for years, believed that the taxpayers for Chicago were stupid enough to pay for the repairs on his aging asset. After all, he knew the stadium was falling apart when he bought it. He knew it was landmark protected. He knew what he was getting into.

Foreclosures at an all time high and will only get worse (no property taxes to pay these teachers),Read More now "too many empty classrooms and too few students" and they still feel they deserve a raise......and get one.
Nick February 17, 2013 at 02:03 pm
The Truth, you are an idiot. that has nothing to do with the school closings.
Andersonville Community Member February 17, 2013 at 03:01 pm
Teachers getting raises have nothing to do with the proposed school closings. And, why are theRead More teachers being the first ones criticized? Why aren't you, a tax payer, wanting to know just how much money you are paying in taxes to support the muli-level administrative system that is in place within CPS with most averaging double what a teacher makes per year?
The Drickster February 14, 2013 at 01:37 pm
Yes but what would the closing of Brennemann, Stewart, Stockton and Trumbull mean to neighboring LVRead More schools? More crowding?
Gunnery Sgt Hartman February 14, 2013 at 02:27 pm
Only in chicago would you have the situtaion where the schools in the wealthy areas are ancient andRead More overcrowded (Bell, Burley, Blaine, Lincoln, etc) and the ones in many of the poorer areas are underutilized.
Sgt. USMC February 14, 2013 at 05:06 pm
We need to spend more on education and less in other areas. Maria Pappas throwsRead More "multi-cultural" parties at the treasurers office every month on the tax payers dime. This is one of many examples where funds are wasted.

Should schedule all the games in September since the Cubs won't be in the playoffs.
gerald spencer January 25, 2013 at 12:43 am
Will they close any of the for-profit schools? Like the one run by the Boka restaurant chain?
Sarah Flagg (Editor) January 25, 2013 at 02:37 am
Hey Gerald! I'm not sure, but Ill look into it and get back to you! -Sarah
