FITNESS MYTH BUSTING: ABS

Myth: You can spot train your lower abdominals or upper abdominals

Truth: Your “abs” are one muscle, the rectus abdominis. It runs from the bottom of the ribcage to the pelvis. When you do a reverse crunch thinking you are working your “lower abs” you are working the entire muscle top to bottom.

Myth: The way to get a six-pack or eight-pack is to do A LOT of crunches; higher repetitions =  higher gains

Truth: The rectus abdominis (six-pack) is a muscle just like the biceps, pecs, quads etc. In order to get a "washboard" midsection, you have to build it. The "definition" comes from building the muscle above the vertical and horizontal tendons that create the “six-pack” sections. How does one build muscle? By progressively adding weight to your ab exercises like you would any other muscle. Do a kneeling cable rope crunch or work with medicine ball in all different directions.
