Lake View High Falls to Amundsen in Basketball (PHOTOS)

Amundsen High School took Lake View 32-20 in Lincoln Square on Wednesday.

The Amundsen girls basketball team is still undefeated in conference play with a 32-20 win over Lake View High School. The loss puts the Wild Cats at 1-5 for the season, but 1-1 in conference play.

Lake View coach Kirk Davis said the team is working to rebuild and Amundsen proved a good challenge.

"I think they're well-coached," Davis said. "They have two nice post players that kind of in my opinion are their team."

One of those posts, Amundsen senior Dyamond Bland, led the team with 13 points and was a force under the net.

“She brings confidence to all the other girls, because she’s so strong and so capable,” Amundsen coach Maggie O’Gara said. “She’s just a leader in that regard.”

The Vikings led 14-5 at the half and Celeste Wiese kicked off the third quarter with an exciting 3-pointer.

Lake View then went on a 6-0 run.

"We made a nice run when (Bland) went on the bench for foul trouble, and cut the lead to five," Davis said.

Lake View guard Melissa Serrano earned a team-high 12 points for the night, followed by Erika Martinez with 5 points.

But the Wild Cats struggled when Amundsen debuted their press. Viking point guard Shannel Rodriguez earned six steals for the night.

O’Gara called Rodriguez a force on top that plays good defense along with offense.

“She’s just a true point guard,” O’Gara said. “And her role is to set up the plays, execute the offenses and balance the floor.”

Despite the loss, Davis said his team is getting better every game.

"We were in the Ida Crown Thanksgiving Tournament and lost all three games, but it was a good building and learning experience for my girls," he said.
