Cubs Cut Ribbon at Greeley Elementary’s New Playground (PHOTOS)

The Cubs, alderman and Greenly principal unveiled a new playground in Lake View after the baseball team donated $25,000 to make it a reality.

The Chicago Cubs, Ald. James Cappleman (46th) and Principal Carlos Azcoitia officially cut the ribbon on a new playground at Greeley Elementary in Lake View Thursday.

Chicago Cubs Charities donated $25,000 to develop the new playground at 832 W. Sheridan Road. Previously, there was no playground for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students to play.

The new playground, however, is accessible to students with disabilities and will allow pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students to have a separate play area from older students.

“We’re thrilled to contribute to Greeley’s mission of promoting health and wellness and encouraging students to maintain a healthy lifestyle,” said Chicago Cubs Charities Vice President of Development Connie Falcone. “Greeley is right in our neighborhood, and we’re happy to be good neighbors and enhance the Lake View community.”

Greeley Elementary is working to ensure students are engaged in health and wellness activities which can be a positive impact to student performance. Beginning this year, the school day will be extended, allowing for additional recess and exercise time and opportunities to utilize the new playground equipment.

“This new playground would not have been possible without the support and generous donation of the Cubs organization and Alderman Cappleman,” Azcoitia said. “We are so grateful to have the Cubs as a community partner in supporting the quality of life and education at our school.”

"As a former teacher, I know how important it is for kids to stay active during the school day,” added Cappleman. “Physical activity helps children with concentration when they are back in the classroom. I’m excited to be a part of Greeley’s mission to keep kids active, healthy and focused."
