City Offering to Split the Cost of Sidewalk Repairs

The popular program is back: Residents can get a bargain on sidewalk repairs when the Chicago Department of Transportation pays half the check.

New Year’s brought festivities and resolutions, but residents can also save a few bucks on home improvements.

Homeowners that have cracked or damaged sidewalks can apply for a city program that splits the cost of sidewalk repairs between residents and the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT).

The Shared Cost Sidewalk Program opened Jan. 1 and residents can apply through the city’s 311 system by phone or online. In 2012 there were more than 150 sidewalks repaired through this program, as well as the Aldermanic Infrastructure menu.

But residents will have to hurry—the sidewalk offer is on a first-come, first-serve basis, and funds ran out in 2012. Once the allotted budget is met, the offer will close.

The program extends to the main walk and the courtesy walk that runs perpendicular to the main sidewalk from the curb.

This year, the cost to homeowners is $3 per square first—well below a private contactor’s cost, according to the city.

Senior citizens and people with disabilities qualify for a 50 percent discount.

CDOT determines the scope of repair work, but repairs are rarely refused. Get started online here.
