North Side Woman Turns Self In After She Tried Suffocating Daughter, Cops Say

Woman charged with attempted murder after she tried suffocating 4-year-old daughter with plastic bag, police say.


A North Side woman turned herself into police after she tried to suffocate her four-year-old daughter with a plastic bag on Monday, Chicago Police News Affairs said.

Mary Ryan, 24, of the 6100 block of Hoyne Avenue, was charged with attempted murder.

According to police, Ryan had attempted to suffocate her daughter in the 5800 block of North Western Avenue around 11:10 p.m.

Police said she turned herself in shortly thereafter. The child was taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital.

Ryan appeared in court at the Leighton Criminal Court Building on Tuesday where bail was set at $1 million. She’s due back in domestic violence court on May 5, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s website.
