Murder Suspect Still Holed Up In Wrecked Car - UPDATED 6X

Illinois State Police are chasing a homicide suspect from Harvey in the northbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive. Suspect has crashed car near Belmont exit. Lincoln Park Zoo being cleared.


Updated Sunday, 8:07 p.m. -- SWAT team members have reportedly tossed the purported murder suspect Joseph Andrew Felton, Jr., a phone per the suspect's request. The standoff and traffic nightmare on Lake Shore Drive between Belmont and Fullerton Avenues is now entering its eighth hour.

-- Police reportedly fired on a man who allegedly led police on a high-speed chase from Harvey to just south of the Belmont exit on Lake Shore Drive, where they man's car crashed around 1:15 p.m. Sunday. The man in the car is believed to be Joseph Andrew Felton, Jr., 43, who is a suspect in his wife's murder in Henry County, GA, Chicago Breaking News is reporting.

The chase started around 12:24 p.m. Sunday, when the Henry County sheriff contacted Harvey Police and asked for their help in locating the alleged murder suspect.

A high-speed chase ensued northbound on the Dan Ryan Expressway to Lake Shore Drive, when a dark colored vehicle rammed into another car in the northbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive, between the Belmont and Fullerton Avenue exits around 1:15 p.m.

A witness told Chicago Breaking News that police fired at the suspect between 10 and 12 times.

WSB-TV in Atlanta is reporting that Felton is a "person of interest" in his wife's murder, who was found dead in the couple's home in Hampton, GA on Saturday. 
Felton is reportedly driving a black 2005 Chrysler 300. Harvey Police still won't confirm if Felton is the man behind the wheel of the dark colored vehicle that crashed on Lake Shore Drive Sunday afternoon.

Family members did tell Chicago Breaking News that Felton was indeed the man inside the wrecked vehicle and that they had been in contact with him by cell phone, and described him as "discombobulated" after the crash.

A SWAT truck is said to be playing a waiting game with the man in the car. 
The north and southbound lanes on Lake Shore Drive between Belmont and Fullerton remain closed. Traffic and CTA bus service is being diverted.  

Updated, Sunday, 2:37 p.m. --
Lake Shore Drive has been shut down between Belmont and Fullerton, Chicago Police News Affairs said. 
Southbound traffic is being diverted at Belmont; northbound traffic is being diverted at Fullerton.
Also, the 2 p.m. Sunday performance of 'Gypsy' at Chicago Shakespeare Theater has been postponed indefinitely because the actors are stuck in traffic, Chicago Breaking News says.

Updated Sunday, 1:52 p.m. --
Chicago Breaking News is reporting that the suspect is from Georgia, who is wanted in connection to a murder in Henry County, GA. The chase resulted from an investigation between Harvey and Georgia police. At least 40 emergency vehicles are said to be on the scene.

-- Unconfirmed reports are that the suspect is still "active" but holed up in his vehicle. Lake Shore Drive and Fullerton are shut down in all directions.

Original story Sunday, 1:20 p.m. -- A high speed chase northbound on Lake Shore Drive between Illinois State Police and a homicide suspect from Harvey has placed the Lincoln Park Zoo on lockdown as of 1:12 p.m. Sunday.

Civilians and officers are being cleared from the zoo for SWAT teams.

The chase began around 12:45 p.m. The suspect is said to have crashed his car in the northbound lanes south of  Belmont and Fullerton exits on Lake Shore Drive.

The suspect is said to be heavily armed.

Chicago Breaking News is reporting that police are chasing a dark colored vehicle.

Avoid the area of Lake Shore Drive and the Lincoln Park Zoo.
