Gangster Disciple Survives Gunshot to Head; Tenant Douses Floor with Burning Oil

From a 13-year-old robbing three adult women to a man trying to put out a grease fire by throwing the oil on his floor, these are the 19th District Police Department's most recent police reports.

The following reports are based on police reports from Chicago's 19th Police District.

The district provides police protection on Chicago's north side, from Lawrence Avenue on the north, Fullerton Avenue on the south, the Chicago River on the west and Lake Michigan on the east. 

UPTOWN

TUESDAY, DEC. 25

Gangster Disciple Survives Gun Shot to Head

A 34-year-old South Side man was shot in the head around 2:50 a.m. on Christmas Day in the 1200 block of West Leland Avenue. While the bullet never left his skull, he walked himself to Weiss Memorial Hospital to receive treatment, according to police. The man is reportedly a member of the Gangster Disciples.

The man told police he was walking and heard shots fired, felt a pain in his head and walked to the hospital, they said. However, the report indicates that security footage shows him being dropped off in a black car.

Doctors reportedly found that he was shot on the side of his forehead and the bullet traveled in his head before stopping. He was transferred to Illinois Masonic Hospital in Lake View for treatment.

While the police report said the shooter was unknown as of Wednesday, it also mentions the man's nephew as a suspect.

WEDNESDAY, DEC. 26

Roscoe Village man Bashed with Bottle at Popular Bar

Police were called to Illinois Masonic Hospital in Lake View around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday morning after a 33-year-old Roscoe Village man was reportedly hit in the face with a bottle at the Irish Eyes bar in Lincoln Park.

According to the report, the man was helping the staff at the Lincoln Avenue bar deal with a few rowdy patrons. When he asked another man to move to a different part of the bar, the man grabbed a glass bottle and hit him in the face.

Injuries were reportedly quite serious—the man lost a few teeth and was cut severely by the glass. Police had identified a possible suspect as of Wednesday, but he was not named in the report.

ROSCOE VILLAGE

FRIDAY, DEC. 28

Armed Robbers Strip Drunken Man of Coat

Police say a 58-year-old Back of the Yards man was cornered by two men on Friday night and robbed at gunpoint on the 1900 block of West Belmont Avenue.

The duo remained at large as of Wednesday, according to reports. The victim, who police said was intoxicated, reportedly stopped around 6:10 p.m. to light a cigarette while walking. At that point, two men who police believe are 25- to 30-years-old approached him.

FRIDAY, DEC. 28

Robbers Place Gun Barrel Inches From Northcenter Man's Face

Police are still looking for two men who they say robbed a 33-year-old Northcenter man in Lake View around 1 a.m. on Dec. 28.

The suspects are believed to be around 18 years old, the report said. The victim, who was listening to his iPod, was walking in the 3700 block of North Bosworth Avenue between Southport and Ashland avenues at the time of the ambush.

He felt a tug on his hooded sweatshirt and turned around to find a silver gun barrel inches from his face, the report says. He told police he couldn’t identify who the robbers were because he could only see the barrel.

The robbers reportedly forced the man to the ground, stole his belongings and ran away. He made his way to a local tavern where employees called 911, but the two men weren't immediately found. They remained at large as of Wednesday.

Robbery Victim Hears Click of Revolver

Police are still searching for a duo that reportedly robbed a 23-year-old Lake View man at gunpoint.

The man parked his car near the 800 block of West Oakdale Avenue and began walking home around 12:40 a.m. when he noticed two men walking toward him on the opposite side of the street, according to the report.

When he got close, the two men reportedly crossed the street and demanded his bag, phone and wallet, insisting they had a handgun. While the man didn’t see a gun, he heard the clicking of a revolver behind him, he told police.

One of the suspects warned the victim that if he looked back, he'd be shot, the report says. After robbing him, the suspects fled and the man went home to call the police.

Butcher Knife-Wielding Stabber Targets Teen Outside Church

An 18-year-old man from Crown Point, IN, was reportedly seriously injured after being stabbed with a 12-inch butcher knife around 9 p.m. in the 800 block of West Addison Street in Lake View.

The incident occurred just outside the Lake View Lutheran Church and across the street from the 19th District Police Station.

SATURDAY, DEC. 29

Ashland Bus Riders Robbed, Frisked

A 33-year-old man and 25-year-old woman called police after reportedly being robbed at gunpoint around 10:10 p.m. in the 1500 block of West Cornelia Avenue.

The pair told police at the scene that they were walking from the Ashland bus stop when two men who they said were between 19 and 22 years old walked past them. Moments later, those suspects approached the victims from behind and pulled out a handgun with a large barrel. One suspect demanded wallets, phones and money while the other frisked the two victims before running off. Police had not located the alleged robbers as of Wednesday.

SUNDAY, DEC. 30

Chicken Wing Frying Tenant Ignites Floor in Wrigleyville

Firefighters were dispatched to the 3700 block of North Kenmore Avenue in Wrigleyville around 1 p.m., when a 28-year-old man reportedly started a grease fire by spilling flaming oil on his floor.

Police officers met the man outside while firefighters worked to clear the flames, according to the report. He told police he was heating up some oil to fry chicken wings when it caught on fire in the pot. The man said he panicked, took the pot off the stove and poured it over the floor, starting the fire.

Firefighters put out the flames. There was minor damage to the kitchen floor, ceiling and walls. The 50-year-old Naperville landlord was notified. 

LINCOLN SQUARE

SATURDAY, DEC. 29

Armed Teens Rob Trio of Women

Three 27-year-old women were reportedly robbed at gunpoint around 10 p.m. by two teenage boys. The women were walking in the 2300 block of West Wilson Avenue when the teens—one believed to be 18- to 21-years-old, the other 13- to 16-years-old—pushed them against a wall, according to the report.

The older man pointed a gun at one of the women, grabbed her bag and ran off, police said. However, when the younger, unarmed boy tried to do the same, one of the other women refused to let go. He punched her in the face to loosen her grip just as her friend grabbed the bag to help. That’s when the boy punched the helper in the face. He eventually gave up and ran off without the purse.

Police searched the area, but couldn’t find the two suspects, they said. When the first woman called to cancel her credit card, it had alreadby been used at a gas station in Grand Crossing.

Hey Jack. If the person's ethnicity is a really important detail about the case, then we include it. For example, if police are asking for the public's help in the search of a suspect. Otherwise, we don't include that detail.

Accurate descriptions of the offenders should be included, otherwise it's pretty safe to "assume".

You know what they say about assuming, Truth ... ;) In all honesty, it's not journalistically ethical to include those kind of details in cases where the information would be superfluous.

Well it used to be ethical (and still is outside of Chicago) but keep on coddling this, especially in Lakeview......

Lescester, the official police report at the district station said the person shot was a member of the gang. If that's incorrect, you'll have to take it up with the police department.
