North Side Jewel-Osco Stores Re-Open Wednesday With 'Do

Jewel-Osco updating six North Side stores with new salad and juice bars, expanded hot and cold food sections, and whole new look, company says.


Perhaps feeling Mariano’s breathing down its neck, Jewel-Osco Stores is rolling out 14 remodels across the Chicago area, including six locations on the North Side.

The newly remodeled stores will open their doors at 8 a.m. Wednesday, and have been redesigned to offer a “more comfortable shopping experience,” according to a company news release.

Expect to run into a few politicians and Jewel-Osco executives at Wednesday’s re-grand openings, as the final touches are put on the “next generation of the new Jewel-Osco,” the company said.

The 14 remodeled location have been refreshed with new self-service salad bars and new juice bars, expanded hot and cold food stations, a deli carving station, and expanded bakeries offering a fresh baked breads, muffins and bagels, and gourmet desserts.

Meat and Seafood departments include live lobster tanks, and natural and antibiotic-free chicken and seafood, which the company says can be seasoned and steamed for no additional cost.

“Jewel-Osco Signature Items” will also debut across all store locations, showcasing a selection of goods from each fresh department that are specially made on site every day, such as cookies and bread from the bakery, deli-fried chicken and store-baked carving turkey breast.

The Chicago remodels, including two former Dominicks’ stores, are located at:

  • 1340 S Canal Street, Chicago

  • 2550 N Clybourn Ave, Chicago

  • 4355 N Sheridan Road, Chicago

  • 5516 N Clark St, Chicago

  • 1341 N Paulina, Chicago

  • 5343 N Broadway, Chicago

  • In addition to the remodels, Jewel-Osco is opening new flagship stores at 1763 Howard St. and 424 W. Division St. this week.

    “Our business has picked up momentum over the last several months, and we have no intention of slowing down,” Jewel-Osco President Shane Sampson said in a news release. “With over 30,000 team members strong, Jewel-Osco has a deep roster of talented individuals that drive our company to be the number one grocery retailer in Chicagoland. We’re getting back to doing what’s right for our customers, our team, and the community.”

    The New Albertsons Inc.-owned grocery chain has 185 Jewel-Osco stores in Illinois, Indiana and Iowa, and employes over 31,000 employees, according to the company’s website.
