Midwest’s First ‘My Fit Foods’ Hitting Halsted, North (PHOTOS)

The Texas-based company is zeroing in on Chicago, brining its half grocery store, half takeout restaurant concept to new spaces in Lake View and Lincoln Park.

Texas-based company My Fit Foods will open a new store on North Halsted Street in Lake View, making it one of the first in Chicago and the Midwest, representatives with the company confirmed.

Located at 3701 N. Halsted St. across from Whole Foods, the Lake View location is expected to open in late spring. It will be one of three new My Fit Foods storefronts in Chicago, with another at 157 W. North Ave. in Lincoln Park, and the third still under wraps.

The trio will join close to 60 other My Fit Foods in five other states.

The store is run like a cross between a takeout restaurant and grocery store, where fresh meals focused on health are whipped up daily. And with personal trainer and My Fit Foods founder Mario Mendias touting 80 percent of weight loss results are due to diet, the store is aiming to make healthy living easier.

“We’re not a restaurant, and we’re not a grocery store, but most people that shop us usually shop us like a grocery store,” said Catherine Stiles, the company’s director of media and public relations. “We do breakfast, lunch, dinners and snacks, and we cook fresh every day. When you come in, it’s just a wall of coolers. Shelf life is about five days, so when people come in, we tell them only to buy three days at a time.”

The storefront on North Halsted, formerly Windy City Video, is undergoing a nearly $130,000 renovation, according to the building permit.

Residents will soon be able to snag menu items like “beef tenderloin topped with onions and mushrooms over cauliflower mash and green beans,” with nutrition facts like calories, protein and fat listed based on size.

And Stiles is quick to point out My Fit Foods isn’t a weight loss company, but a healthy lifestyle company. However, if shoppers are looking to lose weight, there’s a free nutritional coaches at every location, as well as a 21 and 3 day challenge on the company’s website.

“We have small, medium and large dishes,” Stiles said. “Most females will eat a small, and the large sizes are for if you want to split them with someone, or if you’re a performance athlete. … The price range is anywhere from $5-$10 a meal. I usually tell people you can go into My Fit Foods and get a really healthy, portion controlled meal and it’ll probably cost you less than going to a Subway.”

And it’s no coincidence My Fit Foods is headed to the North Side.

Stiles said the company began looking into the Chicago market the second to third quarter of 2012 because research on Chicago shows residents are already very health conscious.

“A lot of markets that we go into are already on the cutting edge of fitness.”
