Chicago to Vote on More Food Truck Stations Wednesday (MAP)

The city proposed nine more stations for food trucks to park, and Lake View is home to two of them. Check the map to see the entire city's grid of approved stations and the newly proposed ones.

Lake View is already home to four food truck parking stations, and if the City Council moves forward with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s proposal, two more will be added.

Emanuel introduced the idea to add more parking spots in early May, adding to the 21 locations around the North Side and Loop where trucks can already park. These nine additional sites will bring the number of dedicated food truck zones to 30.

The new locations in Lake View are slated to land at 3628 N. Broadway St., just a bit north of Addison Street, and 3953 N. Sheridan Rd., just south of Irving Park Road.

“These dedicated stands for food trucks provide additional parking and expanded operations to foster this growing industry,” Emanuel said. “They will also help to safeguard communities from added congestion and public safety issues. I am fully supportive of the expansion of Chicago’s culinary options, including food trucks, and these locations will create additional opportunity.”

At one time Lake View was expected to be home to one more stand before business owners and officials ultimately squashed it.

The parking space at 2934 North Broadway near Oakdale Avenue was pulled off the table after the East Lakeview Chamber of Commerce rallied with local business owners against the location, citing the already abundant slew of eateries.

The same issue shouldn’t happen with the newly proposed stations. The sites were selected through a collaborative process with the Chicago Department of Transportation, aldermen, and neighborhood business communities.

Food truck operators are now permitted to prepare “food to order” on board their trucks and have the opportunity to park for free in these proposed “food truck stands” in highly congested areas, as well as legal metered spaces that are 200 feet from a retail food establishment.

Each food truck will be able to park at one food stand or other legal parking spot for up to two hours.
