Oktoberfest To Spill onto Southport in 2013 (PHOTOS)

The annual event is moving out of its usual pace on Oakdale Avenue, relocating the St. Alphonsus street festival to a more prominent street.

Nothing says “Oktoberfest” like beer and brats, and this year, Lake View’s Oktoberfest will all be done on Southport Avenue.

The 13th annual Oktoberfest street festival to benefit St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church will be moved from its traditional space on Oakdale Avenue to Southport between Lincoln Avenue and George Street. The weekend-long event is scheduled for September 27-29.

Representatives with Special Events Management, who helps put on the festival, attended the recent South Lakeview Neighbors association meeting to ask neighbors for the change. According to SLVN member Michelle Burke, the reasoning behind the move has to do being considerate to area neighbors.

“They are trying to make Oakdale quieter and only have the storage trucks housed on that street for the weekend instead of a stage with music,” Burke said. “They will still put port-a-potties and the tent in that parking lot. They will have the entrance near the alley by George and another stage on Southport.”

The live music performances have yet to be announced for Oktoberfest, but last year the weekend was kicked off with a performance by The Bratwurst Brothers.

It’s all housed in and around St. Alphonsus, an iconic church built in the late 1800s on the corner of Southport and Lincoln avenues.
