High Waves, Low Temperatures Hazardous in Lake Michigan

The National Weather Service issued a warning Wednesday to stay out of Lake Michigan because of strong rip currents and high wave action.

Following a warm, sunny Tuesday perfect for the beach, the National Weather Service is warning Chicagoans to stay out of Lake Michigan through Thursday morning.

According to an alert issued by the Weather Service on Wednesday morning, there is high wave action and dangerous swimming conditions expected.

This warning comes in addition to the significantly lower temperatures, with the high Wednesday being about 70 degrees and water temperatures in the mid-50s, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Wave heights in the lake are forecasted to be between 6 and 9 feet, and as high as 11 feet. Strong rip currents and structural currents are also expected.

“High wave action makes swimming difficult and can tire even a strong swimmer quickly," according to the warning.

The National Weather Service says exposed beaches are more likely to experience the most significant wave and current impacts. Follow the National Weather Service for updates

The Chicago Park District's beaches website shows some closures and swim advisories, including at Foster and Montrose beaches. At the time of publication, there were no advisories for North Avenue Beach.
