Chicago Asks for Volunteers to Help Clear Sidewalks

Residents are being invited to participate in two programs that are seeking help in clearing the city's sidewalks.

The City of Chicago is asking residents to lend a helping hand during this winter's storms.

Chicago Snow Corps is a new program sponsored by the city that connects volunteers with residents in need of snow removal, such as seniors and residents with disabilities.

"While winter can be hazardous for everyone here in the City of Chicago, it can be especially difficult for elderly and physically disabled residents, who may not have the ability or resources to remove snow from their sidewalks and walkways," the Snow Corps website states. "Chicago Snow Corps aims to help minimize potential heavy-snow emergencies by pairing volunteers with blocks where elderly and disabled citizens have requested help."

Volunteers must have their own equipment, and be willing and able to help out in the area designated to them.

To qualify for assistance, you must be 60 years old or older, and/or have a physical disability. Volunteers are only required to remove snow on the public sidewalks and up to the front door.

Feeling extra giving this season? You can also participate in Chicago's Adopt-a-Sidewalk program. Volunteers can use the online portal to claim the sidewalks they'll shovel, ask for help when needed and offer to share supplies such as snowblowers, shovels and salt with neighbors.
