Disabled Athletes Participating in the Fonseca Cup on Sunday, October 20, 2013

This is the third year that John and Elisa Au Fonseca, co-owners of Fonseca Martial Arts-with dojos in Evanston, Chicago, Wilmette and 25 satellite locations through Chicago and the North Shore have sponsored this international event, which is awarding $10,000 in cash prizes to the winners of various divisions.

The Fonseca Cup 2013 is sanctioned by the Amateur Athletic Union and USA Karate (USA-National Karate-Do Federation). The Fonseca Cup 2013 will be held on Saturday, October 19th and Sunday, October 20th in Beardsley Gym at Evanston Township High School (1600 Dodge Ave.) In Evanston, Illinois.

Between 20 and 30 disabled athletes will be participating at 11 a.m., Sunday, October 20, 2013. Depending upon their disability, they will be split into various categories. "This is a wonderful opportunity for athletes with physical or intellectual disabilities to compete in a high quality international karate event," says John Fonseca.

Adam Brozer, one of the most decorated American karate athletes in the history of the sport with 30 international medals for the U.S.A., will be competing in the men’s elite kumite (sparring) division at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 19th.

The best time for photo and video opportunities is at 7 p.m., Saturday, October 19th for the finals of the Elite divisions. The finals start with a demonstration by a few of the disabled athletes.

If you are seeking photos or video of young children, ages 5-7, competition begins at 9 a.m., Sunday, October 20, 2013. The children’s divisions are being arranged by age and skill.

Spectator admission is $5 for those 13-years and older. Children are free.

The last day for signing up to compete is October 16, 2013. You must register online, and fees for participating are posted.
