Community Corner

Leading Northwestern Memorial Physician Partners with The Terraces at The Clare

Though other retirement communities are eager to recruit her away, Dr. Lee Lindquist is more than content to stay precisely where she is at The Clare. An international expert in senior care, the highly acclaimed Northwestern physician said she is proud to partner with The Terraces at The Clare, where she serves as the Medical Director. “There is no place else that is anywhere close to The Clare in terms of quality care, responsiveness and morality,” said Lindquist. “Everyone is very centered on the individual here. Why would I leave the best?”

The Clare is a LifeCare retirement community located on the corner of Rush and Pearson in the heart of Chicago’s Gold Coast.  The Terraces, located within The Clare, provides assisted living, memory support, rehabilitation and skilled nursing.

Dr. Lindquist has many prestigious degrees, honors, certifications, licensures and publications. Most notably, she is an associate professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and the clinical practice director of the division of geriatrics at Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation. Lindquist is board-certified in both internal medicine and geriatric medicine and in addition to her medical degree, has a master’s degree in public health (MPH) and a master’s of business administration (MBA) from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Business.

“Dr. Lindquist is a tremendous asset to The Clare. She has an incredible amount of knowledge and expertise, particularly as it relates to the health of seniors. She brings great energy and compassion.  Dr. Lindquist has a deep understanding and commitment to geriatrics and understands what this population needs,” said Shelly Smith, administrator for The Terraces at The Clare.

Shortly after The Clare was purchased by Chicago Senior Care, Dr. Lindquist was approached to become The Clare’s Medical Director. In Lindquist’s mind, the timing was perfect. “It is an incredible place where the future of healthcare and senior living can intersect, promoting the best in quality senior health,” she said. The forward thinking changes at The Clare have been remarkable according to Lindquist.

“Chicago Senior Care is extremely motivated. They’ve hired people who are interested in this being a progressive community; doing everything they can to help seniors live longer, healthier and happier. Our delivery of care is very senior-centered and very one-on-one,” said Lindquist. “The Terraces has an impressive five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Residents receive superb care; the staffing ratio is excellent as is the therapy.  They truly care about the whole person.”

Lindquist enjoys being at the forefront of senior care. In addition to practicing medicine, she has received millions of dollars in grants from the National Institute of Health (NIH) and Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). “My research focuses on helping hospitalized seniors return to their own home as safely and as independently as possible,” she said. “A major focus of my research is on ensuring quality of life whether at home or in a setting such as The Clare.”

"So many seniors live in homes or condos and have become isolated without many visitors or day-to-day stimulation. Here at The Terraces where seniors receive rehabilitation, assisted living, memory support and skilled nursing, as well as within the independent living community at The Clare, there are so many opportunities to get involved with activities and interact with other people. It’s a community in which people can exercise their brain muscles and keep their memory active,” said Lindquist.

The fact that The Clare partners with Northwestern is noteworthy.  “Northwestern is the top ranked hospital for geriatrics in Chicago, and among the very best in the country,” said Smith.  “We strategically sought this collaboration because they are the best.  The best is what our residents expect and deserve. We’re proud to be connected with one of the leading physicians of the world-renowned medical center.  The focus of Northwestern and Dr. Lindquist on quality care is mirrored here at The Clare.”

Lindquist looks forward to the completion of the recently approved expansion of The Terraces. “Our rehabilitation rooms are almost always filled and have had to sometimes turn away people looking for short-term rehab. Our residents in independent living of course are given top priority but we are able to serve the greater community as well. People know that they will receive superb care here so of course they want to come to the best.” Lindquist said.  “Seniors want to receive therapy at a place that will get them back on their feet quickly so that they can return home. Our outcomes support the fact that this is what they can expect at The Terraces.  Seniors know they’ll get stronger faster so that they can get back to their normal life.”
