The Lake View hot spot snags the attention of the dining magazine for its strong selection of beer and the beautiful cottonwood trees shading the garden.

According to Food & Wine Magazine, Lake View is home to the hottest spot to snag a few brews in the great outdoors. Sheffield’s Chicago, sitting at 3528 N. The Lake View staple is noted for its hefty selection of tasty beverages and the feel of its outdoor space. “This popular Lakeview garden concentrates on the beer, offering a strong selection of American craft brews and a number of spectacular bottles from Belgium, like Brouwerij Verhaeghe’s Duchesse de Bourgogne, a complex fruity-and-sour blend of oak-aged ales,” Food & Wine writes. “Cottonwood trees shade the picnic tables on its comfy patio.”  Also making the list are …

Mind Behind IKEA Branding to Open Lake View Wine Shop

The new business will renovate the gutted space to become Winehouse, a high-end store only selling wines and wine-related accessories. And one of the partners behind the store is responsible for branding Illinois' two IKEA stores.

Specialty wine shop Winehouse is headed to East Lake View, and the local owners say they plan to be the experts on fine wines in their newly renovated space. Formerly home to Superior Eye Care, the building’s landlord gutted the highly trafficked storefront at 3164 N. Broadway after their departure. Now Lake View native Gary Stephens and his partners plan to completely renovate the 1,400-square-foot space with hopes to open in early September. “Our plan is to open an upscale wine shop,” Stephens said. “We think it’ll enhance the neighborhood. The idea is a service-oriented wine shop where people can come in and learn about wine, get pairing advice and have a pleasant experience buying wine a relatively small store.” Winehouse will …

Music Box Theatre Gutting, Renovating Screening Space

The historic theater on Southport Avenue is transforming one of its screening rooms. A bigger screen and new layout is in order.

Fans of foreign and independent films will soon have an updated, new space to sit back, relax and enjoy the show as the Music Box Theatre guts and renovates one of its screening rooms. The historic theater at 3733 N. Southport Ave. started construction on one of its two auditoriums, practically gutting the entire space. When finished, the 99-seat space will be downsized to 70 seats and feature a larger screen. Permits estimate the work will cost $150,000. Buck LePard, assistant general manager at the Music Box, says the project has been in the works for some time, and now it’s finally come to fruition. “We’re renovating our second theater,” LePard said. “We have two theaters—our main one that seats 700 and another that seats about 100. I only included it as one I recall. It certainly wasn't in the same category as Fine Arts, Three Penny, Village or the Biograph. I've been in Chicago for the relatively short time of 24 years so I'm a kid on the block as far as Chicago is concerned.   more ›
