The new business will renovate the gutted space to become Winehouse, a high-end store only selling wines and wine-related accessories. And one of the partners behind the store is responsible for branding Illinois' two IKEA stores.
Specialty wine shop Winehouse is headed to East Lake View, and the local owners say they plan to be the experts on fine wines in their newly renovated space. Formerly home to Superior Eye Care, the building’s landlord gutted the highly trafficked storefront at 3164 N. Broadway after their departure. Now Lake View native Gary Stephens and his partners plan to completely renovate the 1,400-square-foot space with hopes to open in early September. “Our plan is to open an upscale wine shop,” Stephens said. “We think it’ll enhance the neighborhood. The idea is a service-oriented wine shop where people can come in and learn about wine, get pairing advice and have a pleasant experience buying wine a relatively small store.” Winehouse will …

Ald. Tom Tunney says he misspoke when detailing the upcoming closure of the independent grocery store The Market Place. Lincoln Park Market on Clark Street, however, is shuttering.
Editor's Note: This story has been modified after Ald. Tom Tunney said he misspoke, and The Market Place will not be closing this summer. After detailing an upcoming closure of one of Chicago’s oldest independent grocery store The Market Place, Ald. Tom Tunney says he misspoke, and the store will not be closing in the foreseeable future. Lincoln Park Market, located at 2500 N. Clark St., however, will be shuttering its doors this summer. Tunney outlined the upcoming plans to shutter the business at Monday night’s South East Lake View Neighbors meeting, confirming rumors changes were coming to the business. But storeowner Peter Sellas and his brother George Stellas say it’s completely untrue, and Tunney’s slip-up is bad for business. “It’s…

If I read the story right, its because Stellas orginally contacted him when plans for Walmart (which is in Tunney's ward) and the now apparently on hold super Walgreens one half block up the street from Walmart were announced complaining that they would adversely affect his business. Other than that, you're right, why is he commenting on another ward (and getting it wrong!!!)?   more ›
The rumors are true: Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream is coming to Southport Avenue, making it the company’s first storefront serving up the high-end treats in Chicago. Hear what Jeni herself has to say about the move.
The rumor mill can finally come to a halt, because Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream confirms they’ll open their first location in Illinois in Lake View. Formerly home to Safari Cup, the high-end ice cream store will open at 3404 N. Southport Ave., next door to the upcoming Starbucks location. A representative with the company says Jeni’s will complete construction and open in August. “We are beyond excited to be opening in Chicago,” said Jeni Britton Bauer, who founded Jeni’s in 2002. “I grew up in Illinois and have always dreamed of having a shop there. We are thrilled to be joining the amazing Chicago food scene, which simply can’t be topped.” Thus far, the popular ice cream company only has 12 storefronts in Ohio and Tennessee, but sells pints…

The historic theater on Southport Avenue is transforming one of its screening rooms. A bigger screen and new layout is in order.
Fans of foreign and independent films will soon have an updated, new space to sit back, relax and enjoy the show as the Music Box Theatre guts and renovates one of its screening rooms. The historic theater at 3733 N. Southport Ave. started construction on one of its two auditoriums, practically gutting the entire space. When finished, the 99-seat space will be downsized to 70 seats and feature a larger screen. Permits estimate the work will cost $150,000. Buck LePard, assistant general manager at the Music Box, says the project has been in the works for some time, and now it’s finally come to fruition. “We’re renovating our second theater,” LePard said. “We have two theaters—our main one that seats 700 and another that seats about 100. We’…

I only included it as one I recall. It certainly wasn't in the same category as Fine Arts, Three Penny, Village or the Biograph. I've been in Chicago for the relatively short time of 24 years so I'm a kid on the block as far as Chicago is concerned.   more ›

The building has been vacant since 2009, but now the owner says he’s ready to move forward on new construction at the large vacant building on Halsted.
After being vacant since 2009, a Lake View developer says he plans to demolish the former Sappano's Paint & Wallpaper Co. building to construct a 4-story apartment complex. Developer Tom Gibbons of Shepherd Real Estate Subsidiary LLC proposed the new plan for the massive vacant storefront at 2940 N. Halsted St. at Thursday’s Central Lake View Neighbors meeting. He says he thinks it’s the best move for the neighborhood, especially because his family has been a part of Lake View for 30 years. “My father started the real estate business approximately 30 years ago, and I’ve been working with them for 17 years,” Gibbons said. “I also live in central Lake View, so we’re deeply rooted in the neighborhood. “We were here before the neighborhood was…
